Going Bananas Over Googly-Eyed Rings: An Homage to the Banana Girl from Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)

The movie Can’t Hardly Wait (1998) is one of my favorite comedy films EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The film is set at a house party, in celebration of a graduating class that’s out of high school and ready to party one last time before everyone goes their separate ways.

It’s a star-studded cast (to name just a few – because there are a ton of well-known celebrities in this one! – there’s Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ethan Embry, and Seth Green). The movie is loaded with so much ’90s nostalgia, from the clothes to the music played throughout the film (Third Eye Blind, Blink 182, Smash Mouth…again, just to name a few – there’s lots!) πŸ’›

But what person stood out to me the most in this crowded house party of a film? A person without an official character name and had no lines: what I call, ‘the Banana Girl’ (played by actress Amber Benson), who is very briefly seen only for mere seconds, scrutinizing a banana as the camera passes by.

I sort of felt like that would totally be me at a party: no one talking to me, and amongst my own isolation in a crowded room, I’d begin observing something random within reach, like a banana. More specifically though, it’s the green googly-eyed ring adorning her hand that caught my attention, too!

Thanks, Banana Girl, for sporting such a whimsical and fun accessory that inspired me to buy my own!

I’m eyeing my puppet hand here. Somehow, I don’t trust this guy. πŸ‘€

  2. I love Can’t Hardly Wait! As you mentioned, the soundtrack is stellar, and of course, there’s Ethan Embry! But I can’t believe I forgot about the banana girl until reading your post. It’s coming back to me now, and I totally get what you mean about identifying with her aloneness. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve felt like that at a party, awkward and out of sync with everyone else. It’s nice to know that other people feel that way too. And also, of course, that Banana Girl inspired you to get our very own googly eye rings! They’re totally awesome, especially photographed with the banana. I also love the pic of the banana with your shoe! But it’s the last line that’s my favorite: “I’m eyeing my puppet hand here. Somehow, I don’t trust this guy.” It’s hilarious, and completely in keeping with the theme of only trusting yourself. πŸŒπŸŒπŸŒπŸŒπŸŒπŸ‘€
