Mad for Plaid Outfit + Film Review (The Unamenables, 1959)

This time I’m going to review my all-time favorite Soviet comedy, and before I do that, I’ll mention that my outfit of the day was inspired by this film. There was a lot of plaid going on in the movie, hence, it inspired me to wear a plaid shirt of my own, pairing it with a cheer skirt for a mixed look!

Skirt: Spirit Halloween
Shirt: Secondhand // Bow + Clip: SHEIN // Choker: ROMWE
Shoes: Dolls Kill

I really love plaid and I like how it pairs with this cheer skirt. And the shoes, too!!!

Now, onto the movie! 🍿 Today I’ll discuss why I love this film so much. There were no English subtitles available for this film, as it was all in Russian. But I managed to understand the plot just fine by simply watching!

Victor + Tolya

The Unamenables (1959), stars Nadezhda Rumyantseva, Yuri Belov, and my celeb crush Aleksey Kozhevnikov. As I mentioned in the previous post, these are my favorite Soviet actors and seeing them all together in this film is what made me immediately love them!

Nadia – a young, active girl from a factory (Rumyantseva) is assigned to look after her workmates – two idlers who only waste everyone’s time (Belov and Kozhevnikov). At first, the boys avoid Nadia like the plague, seeing that she is trying to reform them and make them better workers, but as the film unfolds, they all three grow attached to each other.

Literally the first two minutes of the film already had me laughing. We’re introduced to the film showing Tolya (Belov) literally dancing his way into the factory alongside his best friend Victor (Kozhevnikov), both of them clearly not giving a fat flying fig newton that they are late for work and it’s evident that all of their co-workers are pissed.

Volodya + Nadia

While Nadia is responsible for making Tolya and Victor better workers, in the rest of her time, she is very much enamored by Volodya – a strong, athletic and good worker. He likes her, too. But it doesn’t take long for him to get irritated that she spends most of her time hanging out with the troubled boys of the factory.

I wish I was Nadia here, to be honest

One of the best scenes in the film is at a carnival, where we get a musical number! Victor and Tolya do a duet and sing a cute little song for Nadia. Shortly after, Tolya breaks out dancing in front of everyone and the crowd loves him. Nadia is full of cheers but then breaks away to go sneak a peek at Volodya, who is about to do some epic diving in the community swimming pool.

We’re brought to the diving pool, where Volodya is performing his high dive and otherwise showing everyone how awesome he is. Nadia is glowing, impressed by him, and then we get Tolya and Victor walking up behind her, clearly irritated that she snuck off to go watch Volodya swim. I get that Volodya has like a Soviet James Dean thing going on, but come onnnnnnn Nadia!!!! Literally the two most adorable guys in probably the entire gosh dang USSR were just SERENADING you, and you run off to find Volodya. Arrrgh!!!!!!!!!!!

As we get towards the end of the film, it’s clear that Tolya and Victor are not the idlers everyone thought them to be. In fact, they are some of the hardest workers, when it comes right down to it. Nadia sees this for herself, and what I appreciate most about this film, is that the film is about friendship. By the end of the film, Nadia, Victor and Tolya are the best of friends – the film literally ending with them running out of the factory, holding hands.

So that’s it for my review!! The Unamenables is one of those films that I never get tired of watching, and it warms my heart every time. ❀️ I can watch other Soviet comedies and enjoy them immensely, but not to the degree of this film. I’m so glad I discovered it!

See yaaaa!!!

Patch Punk: Bring on the Pandas

Bow: Made by me // Clips: SHEIN

I’ve been on a roll with adding patches to a few dresses of mine, and I quickly decided I wanted a panda patch to put on this green/blue one. It just seemed like such a cute idea!!! I found the perfect panda patch on Etsy and it arrived in the mail yesterday. Now I’m sporting the outfit today, panda patch added! πŸΌπŸ’•

Top: Secondhand // Dress: Amazon // Choker: Etsy
Shoes: Dolls Kill

I couldn’t resist the photo opportunity with my panda umbrella, naturally. πŸ˜‰

I love the whole kids-aesthetic look going on with this outfit. Cute animals sometimes make a cameo in my outfits, as you know by now! I honestly don’t think I’ll ever stop embracing childlike-accessories…they just add so much, haha! And they just feel totally “me” – that is – a grown woman who never grew up.

See ya!!! 🐼

Hearts and Bows: A Week of Random Creations

Bows: Made by me // Clips: SHEIN

The creative bug bit me hard this past week, and I found myself making the trek to Joann Fabric to pick up this fabulous Wyla brand lace trim to turn into new hair bows. The hot pink, I’ve had for quite a long time and it’s one of my favorites (I wear it frequently), but I really wanted lavender and yellow too, and those are the ones I purchased at Joann Fabric this past week!

I’ve worn them at home to test them out this past week and I loved ’em. When they catch the light, the iridescent really shows. Incidentally, in this outfit I’m about to show that I wore today, I’m not even wearing one of these bows…sheesh!!! Poor planning on my part, but you’ll see them in future outfits. I thought the matte light pink bow from SHEIN went better with the outfit!

Clips: Amazon // Overall dress + Turtleneck + Bow: SHEIN // Choker: Etsy
Shoes: Dolls Kill

Did you notice how I was pointing at the heart on my overall dress???? Well, that was to point out that I sewed that on myself for a whole new look! I found four sequin heart patches just chilling in my craft drawer and thought I’d add them onto three of my overall dresses from SHEIN. They look super cute and totally change the look!!!

My sister gifted me the heart patches a long time ago (I think she got them at Walmart and she figured I’d do something fun with them), and I used to wear them as hair clips. Seeing that I don’t wear them as hair clips as often as I used to, I gave them a new life as patches. πŸ’— Now I love these dresses even more, as they have a new flair to ’em! (You’ll see the other two overall dresses in future posts).

Do you ever try this? Revamping something with your own personal flair and it totally changes the look?

See ya next time!!!

Springing into the First Week of Spring!

Spring ~ my faaaaaavorite season, ever!!! (Along with summer, that is!) 🌷🐞

With this week being in the 80’s here in central California, I didn’t hesitate to get out and enjoy those warm rays. Which made me think of this: I decided to write out a list of the things that are making my spring already awesome!

  1. Warmer days. This one’s obvious because y’all know I’m freezing if it’s below 75 degrees!
  2. Longer days. β˜€οΈ Yessssssss!!!!! I can’t stress this one enough.
  3. Comfortable walks outside. Heck yeah!
  4. The new Ghost album. It came out in early March, and I’ve been looping it in my car! It kicks ass!
  5. Ladybugs. I’ve been seeing an influx of them in my backyard, which always makes me happy.

And now, for my favorite outfits I wore during this first week of spring:

T-shirt: Secondhand // Skirt: Forever 21 // Shoes: Dolls Kill
Lady bug clips: Made by me // Bow: Childhood // Choker: Etsy

This next outfit felt unusually casual for me but I wanted to try something different! Even though I felt like…too casual. KIND OF. In fact, the first outfit felt super casual too because it was an oversized T-shirt. Anyway, here we have an oversized polo shirt, belted:

Polo shirt: Secondhand
Shoes: Dolls Kill
Bow: Childhood // Choker: Etsy // Clips: Amazon

Lastly, here’s a romper with my neckerchief attached for another sailor-inspired look!!! ❀️

Romper: Forever 21 // Neckerchief: SHEIN // Choker: Etsy
Bow: Made by me: // Clips: SHEIN
Shoes: Dolls Kill

I have been waiting for these to arrive in the mail from SHEIN and I could not be more overjoyed with how they look! These are the prettiest butterfly clips I’ve ever owned. I love the ombre and glitter! And…they were only $2. For all of them!

I figure, some of you may want a direct link to where you can buy these, so here you are!

I hope you’re enjoying the start of spring! See ya next time!!! 🌷🐞

Strawberry Lemonade Checkers Look + Sailor Sam?

There is something I just totally love with this first outfit; the yellow and pink accessories remind me of strawberry lemonade? Or something cute like that! The cross adds a gothic touch. AND THE CHECKERED PRINT SKIRT!!! It all comes together in a fun way.

The second thing I am so happy with in this post, is that I took some time to really work with the setup of how I take photos. It really can be difficult finding something to sit my mini-tripod on, being my own photographer and all! Close range photos are a cinch; it’s the distant range photos that are troublesome. I always sit the tripod on the hood of my parked car and snap a full-length outfit photo, but I was growing very tired of the door backdrop, which looked a bit washed out on camera.

After some trial and error placing my tripod on random things in the backyard, I figured out that setting it on a chair was PERFECT!!! I’m just so happy I found a way to snap full-length outfits much better now. 😊

Bow: Made by me // Clips: Amazon // Top: SHEIN
Skirt: Forever 21

Lastly, here’s my SAILOR LOOK of the day!!! I have always loved the look of a sailor uniform, and I made it my own in a super girly way with my favorite hot pink lace bow and star choker. This is my all-time favorite outfit – feels magical wearing it! πŸ’–

Shoes: Dolls Kill
Bow: Made by me // Neckerchief: SHEIN
Top: H & M // Shorts: SHEIN

Bro. I can’t emphasize how awesome I feel in this sailor outfit. I looooooooove it so much!!!!!! Isn’t it amazing – the power of an outfit, and how it makes us feel? πŸ’•

The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Yellow Shoes

Shoes: Dolls Kill

I remember when I used to use the typing program Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing back in 1999 as a middle schooler, and to me, it was LOADS of fun, besides being educational to boot. It made me a lightning fast typer, and I distinctly recall having to type the sentence: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog, a million times over. And what a perfect title for today’s blog post – but with shoes, rather than said lazy dog!

Bow: Made by me // Choker: ROMWE // Fox clips: Etsy

These adorable felt fox clips were an Etsy purchase I made last year, and I knew wearing something brown would go perfectly with them. Brown, with yellow shoes, to be exact! I recently made the gingham brown bow out of extra fabric scraps I had in my sewing drawer.

I’ve also been upcycling some scarves I don’t wear and have turned them into bows! You’ll see it in the second outfit…

Top & Shorts: SHEIN
Bow: used to be a scarf // Clips: Amazon // Choker: Etsy
Top: Goodwill // Shortalls: SHEIN

Also, shoutout to The Tote Trove for mentioning the word ‘shortalls’ in a comment, as it took me this long to realize that’s a term for the kind of overalls I wear!! It’ll make life easier when I search for that specific word in the SHEIN search engine in the future. πŸ˜†

Brown + yellow = the theme of this post. And I’m digging it, because it’s super ’70s. And I’m sure actual foxes would dig it too, not just because they literally dig stuff with their little paws, but because I gave them a shoutout with my hair clips!!! πŸ’—

On a last note, I went on a jewelry-making-spree this past weekend and made loads of new stuff for my Etsy shop!! It’s been awhile. These are just a few snapshots of what I made! Making jewelry is definitely one of my absolute favorite creative outlets, right next to fashion.

See ya next time!!! πŸ’•

Kawaii Bears and Modern Warfare: A Balancing Act

With the events going on in Ukraine, I’ve tuned in and kept myself informed about the unfolding circumstances, watching the footage put up on YouTube from Ukrainians seeing things firsthand. I keep pondering that in itself in amazement; how much has modern warfare changed, due to social media!! Videos of tanks on the move, jet fighters being intercepted in mid-air, civilians standing up for themselves gallantly – like we are seeing it firsthand ourselves, through cell phone video. Nothing like this existed in, say, WWII. Heck, this didn’t even exist when I was in high school when the war in Iraq/Afghanistan started. This is where I think social media is used for the good! Keeping people informed and empathetic to what’s going on.

Having said that…I quickly realized it’s easy to intake a little too much! It made me feel heavy. And helpless, knowing there’s nothing I can do to change these unfortunate circumstances. It was surreal knowing that my most recent additions to my USSR collection (two postcards I mentioned a few blog posts ago) came to me from an Etsy seller in Ukraine – the city the seller is in, now under siege. It makes me wonder how they are doing.

So, while still staying informed and keeping these things in my thoughts, I reminded myself to enjoy my everyday blessings and enjoy the good things I can control. Like wearing a bear-themed outfit, or wearing gingham print. Because gosh darn it, both make me feel like sunshine. β˜€οΈ So here we go!!! To offset the heavy intake of war stuff, I’m countering it with super kawaii cuteness. Because I need that balance.

The first outfit is a sailor-inspired, nautical look! The other two are all about the gingham. Oh, and bears! πŸ»πŸ’•

Purple Shoes!!!

Shoes: Dolls Kill
Top: SHEIN // Overalls: SHEIN
Ring: Childhood // Bracelet: Made by my sister
Bow: Childhood // Clips: Target & Sally Beauty Supplies // Choker: Amazon

I OFFICIALLY don’t think I’ve ever been so in love with a pair of shoes in my life as I am with these!!!! πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ They make me think of the ’70s. Like something Marcia Brady would’ve worn!

I fully anticipate to eventually get the sunshine yellow pair they also sell these in! They are super comfortable and very lightweight. Ahhhhhh! 😍

See ya next time!!!

Nature Walk & Good Self-Talk

Shoes: Dolls Kill

See that pink and white striped rug beneath my feet?!?!?!

My mom presented it to me the other day as a gift, and I immediately knew where I wanted it: in my bedroom, because I very much needed a new rug (my previous one was quite raggedy by now). At first, I wasn’t sure if the stripes looked right amidst the floral pinkness that is my room. But, I realized after placing it down, it totally made the room look a million times better, unexpectedly! And now I just can’t take my eyes off of it.

What’s the thing to learn here? That things don’t have to necessarily match. Sure, a floral rug like my previous one might’ve matched better, but who would’ve known stripes would add SO MUCH more?

Same thing with today’s outfit; initially, I thought the pink shoes didn’t look quite right. Then I thought, what the freaking heck. Wear the dang pink ones because it adds a PUNCH!

Bows: gifted from my sis // Clips: Target // Blazer: belonged to my mom

You could uh…say I get a little obsessive about matching things with my outfits. And I sometimes obsess over other little things like, Dear God in heaven…why can I never get my eyebrows to look alike? Or obsess over getting my poof just right.

But guess what? No matter how hard I try, my eyebrows never look the same. The poof sometimes has a mind of its own and wants to sit slightly lopsided. And guess what!!!!!!! The world doesn’t end! *gasp!*

Shorts: SHEIN
Choker: ROMWE

My point here is that it’s pretty trivial on the grand scheme of things to obsess over getting things JUST right. In fact, it’s a losing battle. I’m learning that it’s okay for things to be a little askew. Because that’s life!

This is a mini bridge I pass on my walk, where couples hang up locks and write their names on it! πŸ’•

I thought about this as I took a LOVELY nature walk yesterday…in nature, nothing is perfect (although it can certainly look that way at first glance!) But petals don’t grow the exact same size as the other ones on the flower. They’re different sizes and have different patterns. And don’t they still look beautiful? Yes!

So I take note of this valuable lesson from nature. Now, when I look in the mirror and see how gloriously uneven my eyebrows are, how one side of my face looks different from the other, how I can never seem to walk a straight line and I have the attention span of a squirrel, I bask in it. Roll around in it, even. Because perfectionism is unattainable, and perhaps even a bit of a bore, when you really think about it! πŸ˜‰

Look What the Cat Dragged In: Me, and Some Soviet Stuff

I don’t own a cat, but I do own this adorable little kitty figurine, complete with a food dish. And it’s PINK!!!! I’ve had it since I was a kid.

I’ll show you my outfit of the day first πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ:

Bow: Childhood // Clips: Target // Turtleneck: Secondhand // Choker: Etsy
Overalls: SHEIN // Shoes: Dolls Kill

I look like an overgrown child, yaaaay!!! Exactly what I aim for. πŸ‘πŸΌ

Now, for my newest additions to my USSR collection! I find things online every now and then that I’d like to own for my collection, and these are the things I’ve added within the past 6 months/1 year or so: an atlas and three postcards from long ago (I asked my pen pal in Belarus for a translation, and he translated them for me; in short, they are warm greetings written to friends or relatives).

I kept it fun and original and let the cat photo bomb every single photo I took. πŸ±πŸ’•

The atlas book smells just like an old book (it’s from 1979). Sounds funny, but I enjoy sniffing it. I have always loved atlas’, and I used to keep an atlas in my binder – always – in elementary school. Just to gaze at it and dream of faraway places. And I’m enamored by these postcards!! It’s a time capsule. Anyhow, I ordered these from a seller on Etsy who lives in Ukraine. ❀️

See ya next time!! πŸ±πŸ’•
